The decorative coverings industry is synonymous
with one brand:Con-Tact®Brand. The Decora Division of United Merchants
and Manufacturers,Inc. actually created the industry in the early 1950s
when they first marketed Con-Tact®Brand, a printed vinyl film with
a pressure-sensitive adhesive used to cover shelves, drawers and myriad
other surfaces.
Con-Tact®Brand products were a natural evolution of the 1950's plastic craze
in the United States. During this decade,plastics made their first substantial
appearance in peoples' homes in the form of such products as jewelry, bakelite
radios, melamine dishware, Tupperware® containers and furniture covers. Available
in a wide variety of colors,patterns and textures, Con-Tact®Brand became
an invaluable decorating and arts & crafts tool, used widely all around the
house from floor to ceiling.
Although the products have changed considerably over the last fifty years as
new materials, adhesives and production technologies became available, one thing
remains
constant: Con-Tact®Brand is still the leading self-adhesive decorative covering
brand in North America and in many countries around the world.
